DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING


Mechanical Engineering department is in operation since 1988, right from the inception of Dr. M.G.R. Engineering college, promoted by Tmt. Kannammal Educational Trust. Our department made a humble beginning in 1988 with a Bachelor's programme with an in-take of 60 students. As of now the department offers the following programmes:

•  B.Tech. – Full Time / Part Time

•  M.Tech. – Full Time / Part Time: Design Engineering

Besides the department offers off-campus programmes. The student strength as of now is around 900, inclusive of full time and part time programmes. The faculty strength as of now is 28, inclusive of 3 Ph.D. holders, 4 pursuing doctoral degrees and professionals with industrial work experience. Faculty is a good blend of experience and vigour with diverse backgrounds, viz.,

•  Thermal Sciences

•  Design Engineering

•  Industrial Engineering

•  Energy Engineering and Management

•  Automobile Engineering

The focus will be to start post graduate studies leading to M.E.in other major areas like Industrial Engineering, Thermal Engineering,,I.C. Engines &CIM. Research facilities are being built in, for conducting doctoral programmes leading to Ph.D. Simultaneously Industry Institution Interaction is to be built up and consultancy services offered to engineering industries in and around Chennai. A semi commercial Mechanical Design center to be established, where industries can take prototyping, model building and testing activities, which will be self-supporting by way of revenue generation. This modern computer assisted facilities will be used to accelerate the growth of engineering industry in Tamil Nadu.

It is proposed to modernize the laboratories with:

Proposal to establish a centre of excellence to assist the students in research activities is also on the anvil.

Vision

The vision of the department is to train the students with all necessary inputs to enable them to start their own ventures and this is in tune with our University's mission to groom job creators / entrepreneurs.This vision is achieved through a well structured curriculum supplemented with practical training, guest lectures by eminent professionals ,field visits to leading industries and also in-plant training.

Mission

The Mission of the Department is to impart Technical knowledge to the students, to inculcate human values and morales and to make them holistic professionals, so that they are globally acceptable.

The department is well equiped with the following laboratories.

•  Basic Workshop

•  Welding and Foundry shop

•  Dynamics and Instrumentation Laboratory

•  CAD/CAM Laboratory

•  Machine shop

•  Metallurgy and Metrology Lab

Objectives of the Department:

1. To have a faculty group, devoted to academic excellence and ethics.
2. To provide the best lab facilities to the students.
3. To expose the students to the latest trends in the industry by conducting seminars and periodic industrial visits.
4. To nurture students having creative ideas to adopt projects which can be subsequently commercialized.
5. To provide facilities in the CAD/CAM lab to cultivate innovation and creativity in them.
6. To have better teacher – student relation ship.
7. To encourage students to accept ethical and value based goals in their profession.
8. To install a feed back system by which students can take pro-active participation in academics.
9. To develop entrepreneur skills and to develop their personality to face the challenges of the future.
10. To encourage the students in extra curricular activities like sports, games ,fine arts,and cultural.

Our department was rated as number 3 by Sun TV in 2004, behind P.S.G.Tech, Coimbatore and CEG, Chennai; rather, number 1 amongst the self-financed Engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu.

Our students are bringing laurel to the Institute by winning prizes in inter collegiate symposiums,culturals and sports events.

Our students have done exemplary projects, viz.,

Our students regularly compete in inter-college competitions and won prizes; recently our students secured the fourth place(overall) besides first place for best braking, in Soapbox car contest organized by A.R. Crescent Engineering college, Chennai.

Recently in May 2005 our department organized and conducted a National level conference on “ Recent Trends in science and Technology ”.

The Society of Mechanical Engineers is very active and has organized lot of programmes for the benefit of students.

Our staff and students are very active in competing in inter-college events, such as seminars, conferences, symposiums, culturals etc. at national level and regional level.

Alumni

The Institutionl has sent out fourteen batches since 1988. 50% of our Alumnis are working in premier institutions in Indial and abroad, some of the students are self employed. Every year 20 % of our students pursue their higher studies in India and abroad.

Training and Placements

Training and Placement cell is actively engaged in giving necessary training to the students to make them prepared for facing any interview.We do conduct Personality developement programmes by experts to improve the communication skill,ability to work in a team,leadership qualitis etc. We also conduct technical seminars,workshops,confernces to update the students technical knowledge.Also it is arranging for campus recruitment in major companies.
